I've had many inquiries recently about whether airbrush make up is a necessity for your wedding day, and once an for all, here's my two cents...I have been doing bridal make up since I started my career 14 years ago, and to tell you the truth, if your make up artist knows his/her stuff- traditional make up application or airbrush make up application, they should know how to make you look flawless and amazing.
For about 5 straight years now I have incorporated the newest technology and innovation of airbrush make up to my bag of tricks and I cannot be more excited about it. I look at the airbrush gun as another make up brush in my tool kit- and boy has it done wonders for me and my clients!
A couple of months ago, I had a client who wrote me her concerns about airbrush make up because of what another (old school) make up artist said to her about being airbrushed on her wedding day:
"Hi Missy. Before I found you, when I was searching for make up artists, I was told by others that airbrushing is too pasty looking and impractical for weddings. I was told that I can't touch up should I cry, and that I would have a hole in my foundation. I really don't use a lot of makeup, but for this day, I would like my makeup to last all day- especially if I cry- I'm sure I will. Is this true, and if so, what are my other options? Thanks. RH"
This is absolutely not true!
Airbrushed make up should NEVER come out looking pasty. If your make up artist makes you look pasty, it means s/he has a heavy hand and doesn't understand the concept of airbrushing, or make up application for that matter. They most likely are not trained in airbrushing at all.
"Hole in your foundation" when you cry - usually occurs when someone has too much make up on the skin and also has the wrong color foundation on the face. If the tears start building a trough down your face, you most likely have too much make up on.
Quite the contrary, airbrush make up is indeed more than a practical substitute for traditional make up application for weddings and special events! Being able to airbrush also makes the job faster- especially when I am doing an entire bridal party. The photo below is of my one of my brides, a triathlete, who had a very distinct runners tan which I was able to blend out quickly, thanks to my handy dandy tool!

I've come to find out that the make up artists who claim these myths about airbrushing, tell these stories to potential clients in order for them to get business because they do not airbrush themselves and do not have that option for their brides. Future brides, take heed!
If its 'impracticality' we are talking about, I would say its more impractical for me as an on-location make up artist to lug my compressor with me sometimes because I know that I can create a flawless look using the traditional way of making the skin look amazing. But it is the service, the technique and the longevity that you, the client, are paying for.
Many of my clients, especially in the past 5 years, usually get their make up done for special events and photo shoots. Most of the time they are not huge everyday make up wearers, a lot are afraid of having "too much" on their faces, and none of them want to deal with having to touch up throughout their event. So far, I have yet to use airbrush foundation on a client who has not absolutely LOVED it! 100% in 5 years… that's A LOT of faces.
My clients love the way it feels while it is being applied--- it's light and refreshing; they love that they don't feel anything on their skin when it is on; and they love how absolutely flawless, dewy and perfect their skin looks! The photographers I've worked with love it too because it creates less post-production work on their part as well. It's always been a 'win- win' situation!
There are many airbrush foundations in the market and they all vary- some are water based, silicone based, alcohol based, etc. I am very particular with the foundation I use on my clients. I've tried several kinds and know what works best for me and has the best outcome for what my clients need. I am a big fan of the Temptu SB Airbrush foundation. It is a silicone based foundation and has a gorgeous dewy, natural skin-like finish. It can be applied through an airbrush gun and can also be applied with a foundation brush or a sponge applicator.
Here are the benefits of getting your make up airbrushed for your wedding day or big event (granted the airbrush make up artist knows what they are doing):
- weightless and doesn't feel like you have any make up on
- touch & transfer resistant
- water resistant
- lasts for up to 18 hours with barely any touch ups
- the application is absolutely flawless
- photo & HD ready
- fast and easy
- easily blendable from your face down to the neck, shoulders & decollete
My intention for this entry is to open your mind and let you know that there are no absolutes. One is not better than the other- its apples and oranges, and I like giving you, my client, the option.
As far as my wedding make up services go, all my brides, unless declined by them specifically, now receive airbrush make up as a part of their service. Every woman wants to look flawless, supple and have a beautiful glow on their big day. I folded this in as a constant because I know its wearability, photo finish qualities and its longevity. Why wouldn't a bride want all that for their wedding day?
